The Green Bay Packers have gotten off to a 1-1 start in the Jordan Love era, and in the relatively weak NFC North, they could make some noise this season.
As a result, the Packers could very well be buyers in the lead-up to the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline, and with holes in numerous areas on their roster, there is no shortage of players they could potentially pursue.
One such player is Carolina Panthers edge rusher Brian Burns.
The Panthers failed to reach a long-term contract extension with Burns prior to the season, meaning he will be a free agent come springtime. Burns is reportedly seeking in the neighborhood of $26-28 million annually, a price that Carolina was apparently not willing to pay.
For that reason, the Panthers—who are clearly in rebuilding mode—could ultimately put Burns on the trade block over the next five weeks. Should that occur, Green Bay should absolutely come knocking.
While the Packers have already logged five sacks as a team this season, they totaled only 34 last year, ranking near the bottom of the league. Case in point, they could certainly use more juice in their front seven, and Burns would fit the bill. Adding him would suddenly give the club a rather deep stable of pass rushers that also includes Rashan Gary and Preston Smith.
Of course, Burns would be costly, but Green Bay could offer a 2024 first-round draft pick and a fourth-rounder to try and pry him away from Carolina.
The 25-year-old has already logged nine tackles and two sacks through the first couple of weeks of 2023. Last season, he racked up 63 tackles and 12.5 sacks en route to his second straight Pro Bowl appearance.
Brian Burns, who played his collegiate football at Florida State, was selected by the Panthers with the 16th overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft.
