Packers Urged To Take A Look At Intriguing Cornerback Option

The Green Bay Packers are clearly building for the future for the first time in just about anyone’s memory, and they need to bring in building blocks that can be franchise cornerstones for years to come.

Hours before this season’s trade deadline, they traded veteran cornerback Rasul Douglas to the Buffalo Bills, a team that is in great need of reliable warm bodies on defense. Douglas is nearing free agency, and Green Bay got back a third-round pick in the 2024 draft for him, so it may have been a prudent move.

At 3-5 and with a relatively manageable schedule the rest of the season, the team may have a very outside shot at making the playoffs. At the very least, it could build some positive momentum for next season while looking to develop quarterback Jordan Love and improve his confidence.

While the Packers’ defense hasn’t been that bad, they do need a reliable corner, and there could be one available to be signed right now.

NFL NEWS & RUMORS: Green Bay Packers Updates

Bleacher Report suggested they look to acquire Cameron Dantzler Sr. of the New Orleans Saints.

“Dantzler is on the Saints’ practice squad, so he can be added to the Packers’ active roster as long as he’s not one of New Orleans’ four protected players. The 2020 third-round pick has plenty of talent and doesn’t turn 26 until next September, meaning he’s worth taking a flier on for the second half of 2023.

“Plus, it can’t hurt that Dantzler spent the first three years of his career with the [Minnesota] Vikings, so he should know the division well.”

Dantzler was a third-round pick by the Vikings back in 2020. He played three seasons at Mississippi State University, and in his sophomore season there, he failed to give up a touchdown pass while being named to the All-SEC team.

In four NFL seasons, he hasn’t been more than solid, but he has started 26 of his 37 career games, and in those 37 games he has put up 17 passes defended, six tackles for loss and three passes defended.

At age 25, Dantzler could be a low-cost flyer for the Packers to try out, and they could try to develop him moving forward. If he doesn’t pan out, they wouldn’t be losing much.
