The Cleveland Browns are going to be a very interesting team to keep an eye on this offseason. With needs on both sides of the football, the Browns could be very aggressive. One player that has been linked to them in trade rumors has been New England Patriots star cornerback Stephon Gilmore.
Gilmore is expected to be traded this offseason. Just two years ago, he won the Defensive Player of the Year award and was the obvious best cornerback in the NFL. Last year, he didn’t have as good of a season, but was still solid.
In the 11 games that he played in 2020, Gilmore racked up 37 total tackles to go along with one forced fumble, one interception, and three defended passes. The numbers were not what he or anyone else was expecting, but there is no question that he is still an elite corner.
Back in the 2019 season with the Patriots, Gilmore put together a masterful season. He compiled 53 tackles, one fumble recovery, six interceptions, two defensive touchdowns, and 20 defended passes. Gilmore was nearly impossible to pass against for opposing quarterbacks.
Now, we need to look into how the Browns could make a deal for Gilmore work with the Patriots.
One potential trade that has been suggested is plain and simple. It would have Stephon Gilmore heading to the Browns, while the Patriots would get the No. 59 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Both teams would likely be open to pulling the trigger on this deal.
This would be a move that would help take the Browns to the next level. Gilmore would form a good trio with Denzel Ward and Greedy Williams. Shoring up the secondary would make Cleveland even more dangerous in the AFC.
Looking ahead to next season, the Browns have to feel good about their chances to compete. Baker Mayfield and the offense are capable of putting up big numbers and their defense has a lot of potential. Adding a talent like Gilmore would make them even more dangerous.
Expect to hear a ton of rumors about the Browns this offseason. Making a trade with the Patriots is very possible and would make a ton of sense.
