How Patriots Must Change ‘Inconsistent’ Offense Before Week 3 vs. Jets

The New England Patriots were once one of the most feared teams in the NFL for two decades. Now, they are just another game on a team’s schedule.

The Patriots have gotten off to an 0-2 start this season, most recently losing to the Miami Dolphins by a score of 24-17 last Sunday.

Part of the problem for New England has been its inability to convert good drives into points.

While the Pats rank a respectable 14th in the NFL in yardage, they are just 24th in scoring, averaging a meager 18.5 points per game through two weeks.

Offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien cites a lack of consistency as the reason for his unit’s offensive struggles.

“For us, I think it’s about finishing drives,” O’Brien said on Tuesday, via the Boston Herald. “I think we moved the ball at times, I’m not saying we moved the ball all the time, but we moved the ball at times. But we’re inconsistent. We have to coach it better and try to get to be more consistent and finish drives. We get in there and we drive the ball 30-40 yards and then we stall, so we have to do a better job of stringing plays together to be able to finish drives.”

O’Brien says that allowing opposing defenses to make big plays themselves has also been a major issue.

“The start of the games, we’ve moved the ball and something’s happened, whether it was a pick-six or a sack like what happened the past weekend,” O’Brien said.

This marks the first time New England has started a season 0-2 since 2001. Of course, the Pats went on to win the Super Bowl that year, their first of six championships during the Tom Brady era.

But it seems safe to say that this current Patriots squad is not winning a title anytime soon.

New England will aim to pick up its first win of the season when it takes on the New York Jets this Sunday. The Pats have won their last 14 meetings with the Jets.
