The Colts don’t have much depth or experience at receiver
The first reason on the list is the lack of depth and experience the Colts have at wide receiver. Besides Hilton, the Colts just don’t have much proven talent at the receiver spot. They have Ryan Grant, who caught just 84 passes for less than 1,000 yards in four years with the Redskins. They also have rookies Deon Cain and Reece Fountain competing for reps. Chester Rogers seems to have the upper hand on his competition for wide receiver reps due to their lack of experience and production.
In two seasons as a reserve for the Colts, Rogers has 42 catches for 557 yards and a touchdown.
The Colts, so far, have opted not to target veteran free agents on the market such as Dez Bryant and Jeremy Maclin. This move shows the team’s confidence in their young core at receiver and their willingness to develop Rogers, Cain, Fountain, and Grant.
Rogers is taking advantage of the wide open competition at wide receiver.
“I have to seize it and take it,” he said of the number two wide receiver spot. “There’s a lot of competition in that (wide receivers’) room. I like that. Competition makes you better.”
