Jacksonville Jaguars: 3 Takeaways from Jalen Ramsey’s GQ Interview

Cleveland Browns
Patrick Gorski-USA TODAY Sports

The Goal is the Super Bowl … Unless You’re the Cleveland Browns

On the surface, Ramsey saying that “Every year is Super Bowl or bust” doesn’t seem like it’s out of bounds. And it’s honestly not, because every team should be striving to win it all. Especially an up-and-coming team like the Jaguars.

The intriguing part is when he says the following:

“I mean, I guess if you’re the (Cleveland) Browns, you’re shooting for a win. Or a few wins, at least. But everybody else, you gotta be shooting for the Super Bowl.”

With this quote, it becomes quite apparent that Ramsey’s trash talking isn’t just limited to individual players, but an entire franchise. A historic franchise, at that.

OK, it’s obvious that the Browns haven’t exactly set the world on fire in quite some time, given that they haven’t made the playoffs since 2002. I get that. But prior to 2017, it had been 10 years since Jacksonville made a playoff appearance.

And who’s to say Cleveland isn’t the next team on the rise? Ramsey himself said he likes what Tyrod Taylor can do, and he’s one of the Browns’ quarterbacks. Sure, top overall pick Baker Mayfield is who the Browns hope will prove to be their quarterback of the future, but all indications are that Taylor will initially be the starter.

No matter who starts at quarterback, the Browns look to have a bright future. And since Ramsey clearly believes that in many cases the wide receiver makes the quarterback, surely he thinks star wideout Jarvis Landry will make a difference for Cleveland in 2018.

I’m not trying to say that the Browns will win the Super Bowl this season. They probably won’t even make the playoffs, to be honest. But it’s not inconceivable that they could win six, seven, even eight games. And their ultimate goal should be to win the Super Bowl because they haven’t won a championship since the NFL championship became known as the Super Bowl in 1967.

As Ramsey himself told GQ, “It don’t matter unless you win the Super Bowl.”

Just remember you’ve actually got to get there before you can win one. And that’s something the Jaguars have never done, albeit in a much shorter history than the Browns (Jacksonville’s first season was 1995).

But maybe this is their year.
