Jadeveon Clowney Linked To Cowboys As Possible Free Agency Target

Jadeveon Clowney entered the NFL with a lot of hype surrounding him when he was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. He was expected to be the next best pass rusher in the NFL given his combination of size, skill and athleticism. With free agency about to get underway, the Dallas Cowboys are a team who some think he could land with.

While he hasn’t exactly lived up to the hype as a feared pass rusher, Clowney is one of the best edge defenders in the NFL. He is dominant against the run while providing some strong pass-rushing as well.

Clowney has been a journeyman recently, playing for four different organizations the last four seasons. Since ending his tenure with the Houston Texans, he has played for the Seattle Seahawks, Tennessee Titans and most recently, the Cleveland Browns.

Injuries have slowed him down a bit at times, but Clowney has remained productive when he can stay healthy. After a strong 2021 in which he compiled nine sacks, 19 quarterback hits and 11 tackles for loss, Clowney is looking to cash in as a free agent once again.

The Browns would certainly love to keep him around as the bookend to Myles Garrett, but there will be plenty of interest in the former South Carolina product. One team that could get in the mix is the Dallas Cowboys, whom Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports believes will be the team to land Clowney in free agency.

Clowney would be a great addition to a Cowboys defense that made some big strides in 2021 after a disastrous 2020 season. Micah Parsons quickly emerged as one of the best defenders in the NFL during his rookie season and the team is looking to build around him.

With Randy Gregory hitting free agency, EDGE could be a sneaky need for the Cowboys. DeMarcus Lawrence has battled injuries and hasn’t been as productive in recent seasons, so the team could look to bring in Clowney to help bolster things upfront.

Clowney’s presence could help get Lawrence back on track and would provide opposing offenses another player to have to worry about. It would make it that much more difficult to scheme against and slow down Parsons, who put together a rookie season for the ages and should only continue improving.
