With JJ Watt signing with the Cardinals earlier this month, one of the most coveted coveted edge rusher that remains without a team is Jadeveon Clowney. Could the Green Bay Packers show interest in him?
Watt reportedly had drawn interest from the Packers before he signed with the Cardinals, but the Packers might also have interest in pursuing Watt’s former Texans teammate Clowney.
Spotrac has predicted that the Packers will end up signing Clowney this offseason in free agency.
The former first overall pick spent last season with the Tennessee Titans, but he only appeared in eight games after being placed on injured reserve due to a knee injury.
If the Packers end up signing Clowney, they will be adding a piece to an already talented front seven that includes defensive tackle Kenny Clark and outside linebacker Za’Darius Smith. The Packers were 10th in the league in total team sacks last season, so the addition of Clowney could make the Packers’ front seven one of the strongest in the league.
If Clowney doesn’t re-sign with the Titans, then he will be on his fourth team in four years. During his seven-year career with the Texans, Seahawks, and Titans, Clowney has appeared in three Pro Bowls. All three of those appearances came from 2016-18 when he was with the Texans. In those three seasons, Clowney recorded 24.5 sacks, six fumble recoveries, and two defensive touchdowns.
There is no question that the Packers have one of the most dynamic offenses in the league led by quarterback Aaron Rodgers. If Clowney becomes a Packer, then the Packers will become one of the most well-balanced teams in the league.
The Packers fell just short of their Super Bowl aspirations last season after losing to the eventual champion Buccaneers in the NFC Championship Game. At 37 years old, Rodgers is seeking to win another championship before his career is over.
The addition of Jadeveon Clowney would make the Packers’ defense and overall team stronger and possibly be what gives Rodgers his second title.
