Heading into the NFL Draft process, Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter was considered by many people to be the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2023 NFL Draft class. It was hard to argue against that given the resume he put together with the Bulldogs.

Jalen Carter was a unanimous All-American in 2022 while also earning All-SEC first-team honors. He was a finalist for the Rotary Lombardi Award as the nation’s top lineman as well. But, Jalen Carter found himself in some hot water off the field, which clouded his future.

He pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and racing last month in connection with a fatal crash in January. His teammate Devin Willock and recruiting staffer Chandler LeCroy were killed in the incident.

As part of his sentencing, Jalen Carter was placed on probation for 12 months and fined $1,000. He will also have to do 80 hours of community service and attend a state-approved defensive driving course. The state of Georgia can no longer bring additional charges against Jalen Carter now that the matter at hand has been resolved according to his attorney, Kim Stephens.

It is anyone’s guess where Jalen Carter will now end up in the 2023 NFL Draft. It looks like the top of the board will be quarterback heavy, with the only non-quarterback potentially going in the top five in mock drafts being edge rusher Will Anderson out of Alabama.

Despite a potential slide down the board, Jalen Carter isn’t expanding on which teams he will meet with. According to Adam Schefter, Jalen Carter plans to still only meet with teams inside the top 10 of the draft, per his agent, Drew Rosenhaus.

“I’m confident Jalen will go in the top 10,” Rosenhaus told Schefter. “He’s a good person, a family man, loves football and is a generational talent.”

Jalen Carter has already met with the Philadelphia Eagles and this week met with the Chicago Bears. His draft stock took a hit after a poor showing at the Georgia Pro Day in which he struggled to get through drills and didn’t even finish all of them.
