The San Francisco 49ers are a team that doesn’t have much room to make a major move, but they will be looking to make some improvements. One position that could use some work is running back. A name to keep an eye on for the 49ers this offseason is Green Bay Packers’ free agent back Jamaal Williams.
Williams was the No. 2 back for the Packers over the last couple of years. He thrived as a dual-threat running back and would fit nicely into Kyle Shanahan’s system.
One NFL exec spoke out about the 49ers’ expected interest in signing Williams. It seems that San Francisco is very interested in bringing him onboard.
“A name that keeps coming up for the 49ers is Jamaal Williams. Many think he’ll re-sign with the Packers, but if he doesn’t, San Francisco is a good bet. He would fit with Kyle (Shanahan) perfectly and would thrive with a bigger role.”
Last season with the Packers, Williams put together another solid year. He carried the football 119 times for 505 yards and two touchdowns. In addition to those rushing numbers, he caught 31 passes for 236 yards and another score.
At just 25 years old, Williams brings a lot of energy and swagger to the field. The 49ers are known for their swagger, which makes this an even better fit. Fans would instantly fall in love with the style of play that Jamaal Williams brings to the field.
No one knows what kind of contract Williams will be looking to sign. He isn’t going to be super expensive, but his market could rise out of the 49ers’ range. If that is the case, San Francisco will likely look elsewhere.
John Lynch and company are expecting to get back into contention in 2021. Injuries completely derailed them in 2020. Adding a talent like Williams would only help them get back to being the top contender in the NFC.
Expect to hear quite a few teams show interest in Williams. The 49ers may not end up getting him, but they are a team to watch.
