Jameis Winston Mentioned As Potential Free Agency Target For Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders were unable to knock off the Cincinnati Bengals in the Wild Card round of the playoffs and their season came to an end. Despite the loss, it was a great year and there are a lot of high hopes for the future. However, there are some that believe the Raiders should consider making a change at quarterback with Derek Carr and Jameis Winston’s name has even come up.

ESPN took a look at potential quarterback scenarios this offseason. In one scenario they have Russell Wilson being traded to the New Orleans Saints, Derek Carr being traded to the Seattle Seahawks, and Winston being signed by the Raiders.

Granted, that’s a lot to take in for just one paragraph. That would require a lot of big-time trades, which the NFL isn’t known for. But, Winston is a name that could make sense for the Raiders even if they don’t trade Carr this offseason.

Looking at the quarterback situation, Carr gained a lot of respect for leading Las Vegas to the playoffs despite a ton of adversity. While he gained a lot of respect, the reality is that Carr leaves a lot to be desired still. Bringing in some competition for him would be a good move, especially with Marcus Mariota not being an ideal option.

Winston is coming off of an impressive seven-game stint with the Saints in 2021. He tore his ACL early in the year which stunted what was a great year, but he still showed enough to deserve a team to sign him.

In the seven games he played with the Saints, Winston ended up completing 59 percent of his pass attempts for 1,170 yards, 14 touchdowns, and just three interceptions. He also picked up 166 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Those numbers show why a team like the Raiders should take a long look at him.

Starting the season with Carr under center would make perfect sense for Las Vegas. After all, he did lead them to the playoffs this year. If he starts slow or doesn’t look like he can lead the team on a deeper playoff run, giving Winston a shot would be an option for whoever the next head coach ends up being.

Jameis Winston may not end up signing with the Raiders, and even if he did he might not play. Carr could come out firing next season and put away all doubts about his candidacy to remain the franchise quarterback in Las Vegas. Having a fall-back option like Winston would be a very smart move.

Expect to see the Raiders look to put together an aggressive offseason. They are close to being a serious contender in the AFC. Perhaps some competition at quarterback more than Mariota can offer would be a move that helps push them forward.
