James Bradberry Named Best Match For Cardinals In NFL Free Agency

The Arizona Cardinals overhauled their front office and coaching staff this offseason. General manager Steve Keim stepped down from his position for health-related reasons and head coach Kliff Kingsbury was fired after four seasons on the job.

Monti Ossenfort has been tabbed as the general manager and Jonathan Gannon, the Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator for the last two seasons, is taking over as head coach. Their main goal collectively will be helping get Kyler Murray healthy and back on track as he signed a massive contract extension last offseason.

If only their job was that easy. There are plenty of reasons that the Cardinals went 4-13 last season beyond Murray’s injury. While the offensive struggles contributed, the defense was near the bottom of the league.

Arizona ranked 31st in points allowed and 21st in yardage allowed as they couldn’t stop a cold last season. Given Gannon’s background as a defensive coordinator, there is hope that will change rapidly.

The Cardinals were especially poor against the pass in 2022. They gave up the 24th most passing yards and 28th most touchdowns, so addressing the secondary is a must. Budda Baker remains a top-flight safety, but the cornerback position could use some help.

Could a familiar face for Gannon be the answer? Over at ESPN, cornerback James Bradberry was suggested as the best match for the Cardinals in NFL free agency and it is hard to argue against that.

Bradberry was excellent in his one season with the Eagles under Gannon. He formed a dominant duo with Darius Slay, shutting down opposing passing games on a weekly basis. Bradberry was first among qualified cornerbacks with only 4.2 yards allowed per target. His success rate of 68 percent was second.

With nearly $28 million in cap space, the Cardinals should be able to bring in some impact free agents. Bradberry would be a good start given his familiarity with the system Gannon will install and how big of a hole he will be filling.
