Isaiah Crowell, Running Back
A quarterback’s best friend is a strong running game, and the Jets excelled in that area on Monday night as well. Leading the way was Crowell, who carried 10 times for 102 yards and two scores.
After getting New York on the board with a 6-yard touchdown run in the opening quarter, Crowell added the 62-yard run in the third to give the Jets their final tally of the night. He averaged 10.2 yards per carry and was complemented by fellow tailback Bilal Powell’s 12 carries for 60 yards, as the Jets outgained the Lions 169-39 on the ground.
If Crowell and Powell can continue to give the Jets the kind of production they did against Detroit, it will take a lot of pressure off their young signal-caller. Balance is the key to a successful offense, and New York had a successful opening game in that department.
Last year, Powell rushed for 100 yards twice to account for the Jets’ only 100-yard rushers all season. And while the season is just one game old, it looks like they’ll be much improved on the ground in 2018.
