Jets’ Breece Hall Joined Elite Company In Week 16 vs. Commanders

The New York Jets offense has been among the worst in the NFL throughout the 2023 season. They rank near the bottom of the league in virtually every category, as they have been on pace to set league records for their ineptitude.

Not having good offensive line play has contributed to their lack of success and the team’s quarterback play has been poor as well. With no contingency plan in place behind Aaron Rodgers, the team has relied on Zach Wilson, Tim Boyle and Trevor Siemian to fill the void.

With the two most important parts of the offense not clicking, the entire unit has struggled. But, sometimes a player is so talented that they can overcome such issues. Running back Breece Hall has shown that he can be that kind of player.

Finding success on the ground has not been easy this season for Hall and the Jets running game. But, he has still managed to gain 732 yards with four touchdowns despite being limited in the first few weeks of the season.

But, Hall is one of the better dual-threat running backs in the NFL. He has made a major impact in the passing game as a receiver coming out of the backfield or being split out like a wide receiver.

The 2022 second-round pick has caught 65 passes for 537 yards and three more scores. Against the Washington Commanders in Week 16, that dual-threat ability was on full display.

Hall ran the ball 20 times for 95 yards and two touchdowns, adding 12 receptions for 96 yards as the Jets’ workhorse. His 191 yards were more than 50 percent of the team’s total yards in the game.

According to StatMuse, that performance led to him accomplishing something that hasn’t been done since 2007. Hall is the first player since Frank Gore that season to have 20+ carries, 10+ receptions and 2+ touchdowns in the same game.

In addition to that accomplishment, Hall joined an elite group of players with the performance he had against Washington. In the history of the NFL, only four players have had multiple games of 95+ rushing and 95+ receiving yards in the same game; Thurman Thomas, Priest Holmes, Walter Payton and Brian Westbrook. Payton is the only one with more than two, as he recorded three.

Despite being in only Year 2 of his career and playing in 22 games, some hampered because of injury, Hall has already recorded two such games. The first was Week 5 of his rookie season against the Miami Dolphins.

Along with wide receiver Garrett Wilson, the Jets have arguably the best young skill position duo in the NFL to build around. If they can figure things out with the offensive line and receive competent quarterback play from Rodgers or whoever is under center in 2024, this offense should be able to put up some big numbers with Hall leading the backfield.
