Jets’ GM Joe Douglas Reveals Shocking Lamar Jackson Update

The New York Jets have been laser-focused on acquiring Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers in recent weeks. While talks aren’t where the team would like them to be, they are progressing.

A major hold-up is that New York wants some protections on the draft picks they are sending out. Or, for Green Bay to include some future draft picks as well to protect against Rodgers being one-and-done with the Jets. While the framework of a deal seems to be done, hammering out the little details remains.

While the Jets are haggling with the Packers, there is another option available in free agency that would address their needs as well. Lamar Jackson remains unsigned after the Baltimore Ravens placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on him. On Monday, Jackson revealed that he had asked the Ravens for a trade earlier in the month.

There are certainly some Jets fans that would love to see the team go after Jackson. The former MVP is only 26 years old and would be a huge upgrade over what they currently have. He would represent an excellent alternative plan from Rodgers, but Jets’ general manager Joe Douglas threw cold water on that idea.

On Monday at the NFL’s annual meeting, Douglas squashed the idea of New York pursuing Jackson. Whether it is pivoting to acquiring him or using that as leverage against the Packers, there are no plans for the Jets to pursue Jackson.

“First of all, Lamar Jackson is a fantastic player, but where we stand is, it would be disingenuous and negotiating in bad faith if we went down that path,” said Douglas, a former longtime Ravens scout. “We have our plan, we have our process and we’re sticking to that. … We’re never going to operate in bad faith.”

While Rodgers presents an upgrade over what the Jets have had at the quarterback position in recent years, his longevity is certainly in question. There is a chance the Jets only have him under center for one season as he was very close to retiring this offseason when he went on his darkness retreat.

Jackson isn’t even in the prime of his career and has plenty of excellent football ahead.

Closing the door on him would seem unnecessary, but that is what Douglas and the Jets have chosen to do. They have thrown all of their eggs into Rodgers’ basket, which is certainly a risky proposition.
