The New York Jets revamped their offensive personnel this offseason. While the most attention was given to the acquisition of Aaron Rodgers, the quarterback position was far from the only one to undergo major changes.
The wide receiver spot also saw a lot of turnover. In free agency, former Green Bay Packers teammates of Rodgers, Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb, were both signed. Mecole Hardman, formerly of the Kansas City Chiefs, was also brought aboard.
There was room for all of those additions after the Jets released Braxton Berrios and traded Elijah Moore to the Cleveland Browns. Evidently, the remodeling was not finished as the team announced on the first day of training camp that Denzel Mims would also be on the move.
The Jets have informed the 2020 second-round pick out of Baylor that he will be waived. The team is going to attempt to find a trade partner for him first, but should no deal come to fruition, he will be placed on waivers.
This is something that Mims has been waiting for nearly a year for. He requested a trade from the team ahead of the 2022 season after a strong preseason but it was not granted. Mims spent his third season in the NFL mostly watching from the sidelines, getting into 10 games and playing 270 snaps, the second consecutive season he saw his number of plays decrease.
Because of his spot on the depth chart as the fifth or sixth receiver and not playing special teams, it isn’t surprising that the Jets have opted to move on from Mims. While he didn’t get to showcase it consistently with the Jets, Mims has some potential as a big play threat down the field, as he has averaged 16.1 yards per reception in his career.
It shouldn’t take long for him to find a new home, whether it is via trade or waivers. He could soon be joined by Corey Davis, whose uncertain role in the offense and large cap number, as he is owed $11 million, make him a prime cut candidate during training camp.
