RB Trenton Cannon
The Bilal Powell injury gave rookie running back Trenton Cannon a golden opportunity to display his agility. When Cannon came in for the injured Powell against the Vikings in Week 7, the rookie showed his big-play ability. Speed kills in this game, so Cannon’s breakaway speed is an obvious reason why he should be utilized more in the Jets offense.
Now that a healthy Elijah McGuire is back on the field, it’s essential for the Jets to continue to incorporate Cannon into the offense. He could easily see his chances to shine reduce with Crowell and McGuire battling for carries. It’s crucial for head coach Todd Bowles to find a role for all of his backs to display their strengths. All three of them have something to prove heading into the offseason.
For Crowell, he wants to prove there is no need for the Jets to add a new running back. For Cannon, like McGuire, he will need to prove he belongs in the Jets plans. As a sixth-round draft pick from a Division II School, the Jets don’t have much invested into him.
He could quickly be released if they don’t find him useful. However, Bowels appeared to be high on him and had this to say to NYJets.comreporters in August:
We understand what he has talent at, and we understand what he needs to work on as well.
