Jets: Predicting the impact of every 2020 NFL Draft pick

Round 4: La’Michael Perine, James Morgan, & Cameron Clark

With a lot of the outstanding athletes gone, the Jets went in a different direction in the 4th round, with a selection of running back, a quarterback, and an offensive tackle.

The New York Jets selected La’Michael Perine with the 120th pick in the draft, and on paper, drafting a running back does not make a lot of sense overall from an analytics perspective, but if you are going to take a running back, you might as well take a very athletic one, or a super-skilled one, but neither seem to be the case with Perine.

Perine was the 2nd Florida pick for the Jets in this draft, but unlike his teammate in Jabari Zuniga, Perine is an average athlete at the very best. At the combine, Perine did manage to have a good 10-yard split as he finished with a 1.52, but besides that, there is not much to be pleased about

Even though Perine is not the most athletic player in the world, he sometimes saves himself by being a fairly intelligent runner of the football and has shown quality vision running between the tackles.

As far as impact goes, Perine will likely not impact the Jets much for a couple of different reasons. Perine won’t make a big impact because first off, he’s a running back and running backs have very little value overall, and secondly, Perine will be competing for snaps behind Le’Veon Bell and Frank Gore. Perine might be able to get significant snaps later on down the line, but he will likely be held back by his lack of athleticism

Sam Darnold has seemingly been locked into the starting QB job for the Jets, even though he’s struggled mightily and has been the 2nd worst QB from the 2018 1st round draft picks, only behind Josh Rosen, but that is an article for another day, as the Jets have drafted another QB in the way of James Morgan.

James Morgan split his time in college between two different schools. Morgan started his college career at Bowling Green before he eventually moved on and landed at FIU, but unfortunately, he did not show a lot of promise at Bowling Green or FIU

James Morgan is the classic big arm QB stereotype. Morgan has an absolute cannon for an arm that allows him to throw pretty much any throw he wants, the problem with this is that his accuracy and decision making lag far behind his arm strength. Morgan will either try to throw a pass that simply has no business being thrown, or will just simply miss his receiver due to poor mechanics.

While Sam Darnold has struggled through his first few years in the NFL, Morgan likely will not replace Darnold and will likely spend his first few years on the bench, likely only impacting the Jets as a potential backup for Darnold, or coming in during garbage time situations.

The Jets selected an athletic freak of nature who is definitely more on the developmental side of things than he is on the NFL ready side of things, and now they selected an offensive tackle who has NFL ready pass set traits, but struggles as an athlete.

Cameron Clark played his entire college career at the relatively small University of Charlotte, but even though Clark played at Charlotte, that didn’t stop his development.

Unlike his counterpart in Becton who is a little on the raw side when it comes to pass blocking, Clark is a quality pass blocker. Clark has some great hands and is often able to either knock defenders off-balance, or latch on and slow them down immensely.

Like Becton, Clark will likely be stuck behind George Fant for the time being, and later on, he will likely either be competing with Becton for the left tackle position, or wind up playing right tackle.
