The New York Jets made a surprising move earlier this week, signing safety Adrian Amos. It was a move many people attributed to the Aaron Rodgers connection as Amos has spent the last four seasons as a starter for the Green Bay Packers. Alas, it seems like the move was because of more than just that.
Amos could be stepping right into a full-time role with the Jets as some devastating news has come from their training camp. Safety Chuck Clark, who was expected to start alongside Jordan Whitehead, reportedly suffered what is to be believed a serious knee injury.
Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic shared an update on Twitter about the situation. He mentions that could have led to Amos signing as the Jets were in on him recently following his visit with the Baltimore Ravens. However, the chance at a starting role is what led him to Gang Green.
The team is awaiting a second opinion on the injury before any official ruling is made. NFL insider Aaron Wilson echoed what Rosenblatt said as there is major concern a season-ending injury was suffered by Clark. There is potential damage to his ACL as well.
The Jets originally acquired Clark earlier this offseason from the Ravens in a trade. It was thought of as a shrewd move by general manager Joe Douglas as Clark has been a solid contributor in the Baltimore secondary for years but they were ready to go younger at the position.
Given the urgency that New York showed in bringing in Amos, signing him to a deal that could pay him up to $4 million, it is fair to assume that Clark’s injury is of the serious variety. Otherwise, the Jets would have signed another camp body to take Clark’s reps in practice until he was able to return, not a veteran that will likely be stepping into the starting lineup.
