Jimmy Garoppolo Floated As Buccaneers’ Future After Tom Brady

While the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are focused on turning their 2022 season around, there are some people within the organization that are keeping an eye on the future. Things are up in the air in Tampa Bay right now as no one knows what the future holds for Tom Brady. Could Jimmy Garoppolo end up replacing Brady in the future?

Brady will be 46 years old when the 2023 season kicks off, so it wouldn’t surprise anyone if he decides to retire, for real this time, following the conclusion of the season. He has shown this season that he still has something left in the tank as he leads the NFL in pass attempts, pass completions and interception percentage.

At 45 there may not be the same zip on the ball, but Brady can still place it where it needs to be for his pass catchers to make a play. Despite that, the Buccaneers need to begin preparing for life after Brady and shouldn’t consider him as part of their future plans.

That would leave a glaring hole at the quarterback position, something the team wasn’t overly prepared for during the 2022 offseason when Brady first retired. They were left with Kyle Trask, a 2021 second-round pick, and brought back Blaine Gabbert as well. That isn’t too encouraging of a depth chart, so the team could look outside the organization for quarterback help.

One name to keep an eye on is Jimmy Garoppolo of the San Francisco 49ers. Garoppolo is set to be a free agent after this season as well and given the capital that the team spent on Trey Lance, it is hard to imagine him not getting a crack at the job again in 2023 after an ankle injury ended his 2022 campaign prematurely.

Garoppolo would provide the Buccaneers with a stable option at the quarterback spot. While his statistics aren’t gaudy, he puts up big numbers in the most important stat, which is winning. Garoppolo is 37-17 in his career as a starter as he finds a way to get the job done as an elite game manager.

That would be a drastic change from Brady, who puts up big stats every season. But, at the end of the day, the name of the game is winning and Garoppolo is more than capable of doing that. If the opportunity presents itself, Tampa Bay would be smart to pursue him as a Tom Brady replacement should the GOAT decide to hang up his cleats after the season.
