The Green Bay Packers desperately need to make some moves this offseason to get over the hump in the NFC. For two straight years now, the franchise has gotten to the NFC Championship Game, just to lose. Now, it appears that they could be in prime position to sign superstar defensive end JJ Watt in free agency.
Following his release from the Houston Texans, rumors and rumblings began about Watt heading home to Wisconsin to join the Packers. It seems like those rumors and rumblings are a bit more than that now.
According to a report from TexansDaily.com, Watt signing with the Packers is the “most likely” scenario for the star pass-rusher right now.
Watt heading home to Wisconsin would be a perfect fit for both sides. Green Bay would be getting one of the most lethal defensive stars in the game, while Watt would be able to compete for a Super Bowl. It’s a win-win scenario for both parties involved.
Last season with the Texans, Watt became frustrated with his team’s losing ways. He ended up recording 52 total tackles, five sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, an interception, a defensive touchdown, and seven defended passes.
Those numbers would look great on the defensive front for the Packers. He would join Za’Darius Smith as a superstar tandem rushing the passer. Rashan Gary is another name that had a great season in 2020 and is a dangerous pass rusher.
Unfortunately, this move would likely spell the end of the “Smith Bros” tandem of Za’Darius and Preston Smith. Preston Smith would likely be released to help create some money to get this deal done.
Expect to hear a ton of rumors and reports about JJ Watt as the offseason progresses. As of right now, however, the Packers seem to be the most likely landing spot for him.
