Joe Burrow Speaks Out On Contract Situation With Bengals

The Cincinnati Bengals are going to have their work cut out for them the next few offseason keeping their core together. That is one of the curses about drafting and developing players as well as they have the last few years; eventually, those guys have to get paid.

Atop that list is none other than quarterback Joe Burrow. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft has certainly lived up to expectations, helping turn around the franchise almost immediately.

In his second season as the starter, he won the team’s first playoff game in 30 years and advanced to the Super Bowl. This past season, the team made another appearance in the AFC Championship Game, falling just short against the Kansas City Chiefs in a rematch.

There is a chance that Burrow will reset the quarterback market with his new deal and no one would bat an eye. He has accomplished a lot in three seasons in the NFL and the future looks extremely bright for him and the Bengals.

While it will take some time for that new extension to be worked out, discussions have already begun. Ari Meirov shared an update on the situation on Twitter, revealing some of Burrow’s thoughts on the situation.

That last part of the tweet is very interesting. Keeping everyone long-term is a virtual impossibility. Just look at how this offseason went for the Bengals with Jessie Bates III, Vonn Bell and Hayden Hurst departing Cincinnati in free agency.

The first player that Burrow could be referencing is wide receiver, Tee Higgins. He is heading into the final year of his rookie contract and many thought he would be a trade candidate given his contract status. However, Cincinnati is running it back at least one more season with him starting opposite of Ja’Marr Chase.

Next offseason, the Bengals will have to decide on Chase’s fifth-year option and he will be eligible for an extension as well. Keeping the band together on offense will be expensive, but it sounds as if Burrow is willing to make some concessions to ensure that it happens.

That is part of what made the New England Patriots a sustained dynasty with Tom Brady at the helm. He always took under-market contracts to ensure the rest of the roster was well-stocked. Burrow looks to be heading down the same path.
