Jonah Williams Is A Possible Trade Target For Jets

The New York Jets have done a good job upgrading their roster this offseason. They have filled a few of the gaps that existed and look like they are ready to take that next step. However, until they address the quarterback position, it is tough to get too excited about their outlook.

That should occur when the team acquires Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers. The two sides are still negotiating and are reportedly far apart in talks. While Rodgers intends to play for the Jets this season, it sounds as if there is a long way to go until he officially joins the team.

Rodgers, or whoever is stepping into the starting quarterback role in 2023, is joining a ready-made unit for success. The only other area on the team that needs some addressing is the offensive line.

New York has poured a ton of assets into fixing that unit but injuries have derailed any progress that they have made. That could lead to them scouring the market for an upgrade and they could see Jonah Williams of the Cincinnati Bengals as one.

After the Bengals signed Orlando Brown Jr. to a four-year deal in free agency, Williams requested a trade from the franchise. He has no interest in playing right tackle and would like a change of scenery.

Over at ESPN, Bill Barnwell put together a list of players who are available on the market and their best fits. For Williams, a trade to the Jets was suggested as the teams could swap players that have fallen out of favor.

Williams would head to the Jets in exchange for a former first-round pick, Mekhi Becton. The Bengals would get a chance to see if Becton can realize his immense potential, and if he doesn’t, they can move on from him and save some money in the process as he is cheaper than Williams.

For the Jets, Williams may not possess the upside that Becton does, but at least he gets on the field. He would have a chance to compete for the left tackle spot with Duane Brown, who is 37 and entering the final year of his contract. A strong season as a willing right tackle could lead to him getting flipped back over to left in 2024.
