There has been no progress between running back Josh Jacobs and the Las Vegas Raiders on a long-term contract. The 2019 first-round pick had the franchise tag placed on him earlier this offseason, which he has yet to sign.
The two sides have until July 17th to work out a long-term deal. If no deal is reached by that point, Josh Jacobs will have to play out the 2023 season on the franchise tender, worth $10.1 million, or sit out.
From the looks of it, negotiations are going to go down to the wire, if they are able to get done at all. Josh Jacobs sent out a cryptic tweet earlier this week that makes it seem that talks between the two sides aren’t going very well.
In response to that tweet, his former teammate, Richie Incognito, offered a response in support of Josh Jacobs, saying to pay that man. This isn’t the first time that the Alabama product has let his feelings be known via social media.
Last week, Josh Jacobs retweeted an article from Jim Trotter of The Athletic questioning the market for running backs. The Raiders star isn’t the only player at the position that isn’t being compensated for his production, as Saquon Barkley and Tony Pollard, who were franchise tagged by the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys, find themselves in a similar boat.
During an episode of the, ‘I Am Athlete’ podcast, former NFL wide receiver Brandon Marshall also spoke about the former first-round pick and the state of the running back position. Marshall believes running back is the most disrespected position in all of sports and Josh Jacobs would seem to agree.
Josh Jacobs wants to get paid this season after leading the league in rushing yards, total touches and yards from scrimmage last season. But, it doesn’t look like the Raiders are ready to pay him the kind of contract he is seeking.
The pressure and intensity of negotiations are only going to go up as we get closer to the July 17th deadline. If no deal is reached, there is a real possibility that he holds out during training camp.
