Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes Addresses Outburst Against Refs

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes uncharacteristically lost his cool during (and after) his team’s loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, throwing a fit on the sidelines following a controversial offsides penalty on wide receiver Kadarius Toney that overturned what would have been a game-winning Chiefs touchdown.

Afterward, Mahomes explained his tirade.

“It [was the Toney] call,” Mahomes told reporters, via the Chiefs’ official YouTube account. “Just in that moment… [To have] a flag change the outcome of the game in that moment. I’ve played seven years [and] never had offensive offsides called. That’s elementary school. You point to the ref [to make sure you’re onsides] and it doesn’t get called. And if it does, they warn you, and there was no warning throughout the entire game.”

Most agreed that Toney was clearly offsides, but obviously, Mahomes’ emotions got the best of him in the moment. He also was upset with the lack of consistency, as Bills defensive lineman Von Miller appeared to be offsides earlier in the game, but nothing was called.

“Let us play the game,” he said. “And then whatever happens, happens. The whole throwing the flag and deciding the game one [way] or another, that’s what hurts me.”

The Chiefs have had multiple run-ins with disputable officiating this season, and Mahomes is tired of it.

“Another game, we’re talking about the refs,” he explained. “It’s not what we want for the NFL. It’s not what we want for football.”

Mahomes went 25-for-43 with 271 yards, a touchdown and an interception against the Bills in what was his latest mediocre outing this season.

The two-time MVP has thrown for 3,398 yards, 23 touchdowns and 11 picks while completing 66.9 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 93.3 on the year overall.

Kansas City fell to 8-5 with the loss to Buffalo and is now just 2-4 over its last six games.

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs will aim to right the ship against the New England Patriots next Sunday.
