Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been fined by the NFL for criticizing the officiating following his team’s Week 14 loss to the Buffalo Bills, via Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. Head coach Andy Reid was also fined.

Mahomes was aggravated with an offensive offsides call that wiped out what would have been a go-ahead touchdown for the Chiefs with under two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

The two-time MVP had to be restrained by teammates from going after the referees and also made note of his frustration with the call during his postgame handshake with Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

Mahomes continued his assault on the officials after the game, saying “it’s not what we want for football” and stating that there should have been some kind of a warning before Kansas City was flagged for offensive offsides—an incredibly rare penalty.

Reid also questioned why there was no warning and said it was “a bit embarrassing.”

In spite of the protests of both Mahomes and Reid, just about everyone was in agreement that the officials made the right call.

Mahomes would later apologize for his on-field actions, which were certainly out of character for the typically even-keeled signal-caller.

The 28-year-old went 25-for-43 with 271 yards, a touchdown and an interception in the loss to Buffalo in what was just his latest underwhelming performance of 2023.

On the season overall, Mahomes has thrown for 3,398 yards, 23 touchdowns and 11 picks while completing 66.9 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 93.3.

Kansas City has lost four of its last six games to fall to 8-5 on the year. Patrick Mahomes and Co. have failed to crack 20 points in any of their last four losses.

The Chiefs will look to get back on track when they take on the New England Patriots on Sunday.
