Kansas City Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes negotiating historic contract extension

The Kansas City Chiefs have initiated talks with franchise-quarterback Patrick Mahomes regarding a contract extension. The deal is expected to be historic that will make him the highest-paid player in NFL history.

According to Sam Mellinger of the Kansas City Star, what is currently known regarding Mahomes’ talks with the Chiefs is that they’ve taken place ‘in some form’ but it’s ‘hard to know exactly where things stand.’

During the upcoming season, Mahomes is set to earn $5.3 million between the signing bonus, roster bonus, and base salary of his deal. It’s safe to say that will go up drastically on his next deal.

The accomplishments Mahomes has achieved at such a young age is nothing short of incredible. He has done more than enough to command a historic contract that should reset the entire quarterback market.

Mahomes earned the league MVP award during his first full season as a starter in 2018, racking up 383 completions, 5,097 yards, and 50 touchdowns. He followed that up by leading the Chiefs to a Super Bowl victory the following season.

It’s fascinating to think about what Mahomes and the Chiefs may achieve during the upcoming season. Kansas City is returning 20 of its 22 starters from a Super Bowl squad while adding Clyde Edwards-Helaire in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The foundation Patrick Mahomes has established for himself makes him appear set to tear apart the record books for the quarterback position. He very well could end up being one of, if not the greatest player his position of all-time if he can keep up his production.
