Hill and Patrick Mahomes need to have a great rapport

The Kansas City Chiefs made some changes in the offseason. Besides Nagy’s exit, they bid adieu to quarterback Alex Smith. Smith had his best season and went on to cash in on his success. Now, the team has Patrick Mahomes as their quarterback. Mahomes was the Chiefs’ first-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft (10th overall). He was able to start the last game of the season and showed why many, not just the Chiefs, were so high on him.

Now Mahomes gets the chance to lead the offense. He’s had a good preseason so far. In two games, he’s gone 13-19 for 171 yards and one glorious looking touchdown. That score came in the Chiefs’ preseason Week 2 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. It was a 69-yard bomb that looked like it went 60 yards up in the air.

The recipient of that touchdown pass was Mr. Hill. That needs to continue for Kansas City. Hill needs to help Mahomes in his development and the two need to become a great combination we’ve seen throughout the history of the NFL. Hill is just in his third season so the two can be good for the offense for a number of years to come.

Yes, I know quarterbacks like to have big receiving targets like Kelce. Having a speedy receiver who goes downfield is something that works to Mahomes’ strength. He loves slinging that ball and has the power in his arm to throw deep consistently. Of course, Hill can also make catches underneath and just about anywhere around the field, so Mahomes can feel comfortable going to him at any time.

After a particularly good practice that offered some good highlights between Hill and Mahomes, Hill spoke about teaming up with the young quarterback. Lynn Worthy of the Kansas City Star describes it:

That connection between Mahomes and Hill served as the biggest offensive highlight of day and perhaps a precursor of things to come. When asked by a reporter if he felt like the match of him and Mahomes was meant to happen, Hill didn’t hesitate before replying, “Yes, it was. It was. That’s obviously why he’s here.”

If Mahomes and Hill become a good combination, expect a lot of excitement from the Kansas City Chiefs in 2018 and beyond.
