Kirk Cousins Predicted To Repeat History With Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons solved their quarterback issue by signing Kirk Cousins in free agency in March. They then doubled down by drafting Michael Penix Jr., but that’s a story for another day.

The Falcons are expected by many to win the NFC South due to the overall weakness of the division, although the Tampa Bay Buccaneers proved they are pretty legitimate last season.

But is Atlanta a serious threat to make a deep playoff run with Cousins under center?

Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon doesn’t think so.

While Gagnon does believe that the Falcons will win 10 games and win the division, he doesn’t think they will make much noise in the postseason.

Gagnon thinks Atlanta will lose in the Wild Card Round, which would be par for the course for Cousins.

Cousins has started four playoff games in his career and has gone just 1-3. He has never made it past the Divisional Round.

Are the Falcons even the best team in the NFC South?

I’m just not sure how much we can bank on Cousins given the fact that he is coming off of a torn Achilles and will be 36 years old at the start of the season.

He is definitely a good quarterback when healthy, but that’s just the thing: will Cousins be healthy? And again, as solid as he has been throughout his career, Cousins’ big-game success is virtually non-existent.

The Falcons also clearly have some holes.

Firstly, they don’t have a lot of offensive depth at the skill positions. Bijan Robinson is a stud at running back, Drake London is a very good wide receiver and Kyle Pitts has a 1,000-yard campaign under his belt at tight end, but beyond those three, Atlanta has a whole lot of question marks. Plus, we don’t even know if London is a true No. 1 guy just yet.

Another problem for Atlanta is its lack of a pass rush, which was why so many anticipated that the Falcons would select an edge rusher with the eighth pick of the NFL Draft. Instead, they took Penix.

Meanwhile, the Buccaneers have some impressive pieces on both sides of the ball and just routed the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs last January. They still have to be considered the favorites to win the NFC South, even with the Falcons’ offseason additions.

Atlanta is certainly better off with Cousins than Desmond Ridder, but how much the aging Kirk Cousins actually moves the needle for the club remains to be seen.
