When the Las Vegas Raiders acquired wide receiver Davante Adams in a trade with the Green Bay Packers back in March 2022, the Raiders were hoping that Adams would add some stability to the organization.
What they likely weren’t anticipating was a quarterback controversy.
In Adams’ debut season in Las Vegas last year, Derek Carr was under center, and the Raiders went 6-11. They proceeded to cut Carr over the offseason and then signed Jimmy Garoppolo to a three-year deal.
Well, through the games this season, Garoppolo has thrown five touchdowns and a league-leading six interceptions, so the early returns have not exactly been great. In addition, Garoppolo is currently in concussion protocol, leaving his status for the team’s Week 4 matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers in question.
Garoppolo’s potential absence could press rookie signal-caller Aidan O’Connell into action, something that Adams may actually be in favor of.
“Aidan’s been doing—I think he’s opened up a lot of eyes since he has been here, coming from Purdue and not being a super highly touted quarterback, as far as to my knowledge,” said Adams, via the Raiders’ official team site. “I think he has surprised a lot of people for what he has done. He has shown a lot of poise and some promise, for sure. But he’s got to just keep doing what he’s doing and he will be well on his way when his time comes.”
While Davante Adams stopped short of giving O’Connell a ringing endorsement, he seems comfortable with the idea of O’Connell taking snaps. Of course, Adams also isn’t going to outright bash the possibility, but O’Connell also created a lot of buzz for his impressive performance in preseason, so Adams may very well be looking forward to giving the youngster a chance.
One thing is for sure: Las Vegas needs a win this weekend, as it is just 1-2 thus far this season.
