The Detroit Lions 2023 NFL Draft class has drawn a wide range of opinions from analysts and fans. You either love what they did, stick to their board staunchly regardless of position and perceived value and select good football players. Or, you hate what they did, as they passed on positions of need and used premium capital on non-premium positions.
Regardless of where you stand, there is no denying that Detroit’s roster is stronger now than it was before the draft. While their strategy wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, the Lions added players who will contribute right away and help them win football games.
Atop the list of debatable selections was Alabama running back Jamhyr Gibbs. Detroit traded back from No. 6 in the first round to No. 12 and used that pick on Gibbs, who they were reportedly comfortable selecting sixth had the Arizona Cardinals not completed a trade with them.
Gibbs is a real home run threat out of the backfield with the skill set to play on early downs and run between the tackles or be used as a pass catcher. His skill set is reminiscent of Alvin Kamara, but that wasn’t who his pro player comp was.
Instead, the pro player comp that Gibbs received was San Francisco 49ers star Christian McCaffrey. It is an interesting comp, and one the Lions certainly hope that he reaches as McCaffrey is arguably the best running back in the NFL.
McCaffrey has shown that he can handle a work-horse role out of the backfield. While Gibbs has the talent to handle such a role, there are concerns about whether or not he would hold up as he is listed at 5’11” and 200 pounds. McCaffrey is a prime example of it being possible as he is also 5’11” and weighs 205 pounds.
With running backs being devalued around the league, a lot of people want to pile on the Lions for that selection. But, people are underestimating the impact that Gibbs can have. He won’t need to carry the load by himself with David Montgomery in the mix, which will keep him fresh and ready to go throughout the season.
