There was a chance that Sunday night was the last time the Detroit Lions would be fortunate enough to have offensive coordinator Ben Johnson on their sidelines. After turning away potential suitors seeking him to become their head coach last offseason, he was set to be part of the cycle again.
It is easy to see why Johnson would be a sought-after candidate. The Lions’ offense has been spectacular under his watch for the last two seasons. In 2023, he was a big reason the team won the NFC North and advanced to the NFC Championship Game against the San Francisco 49ers.
While the Lions ultimately fell short of a trip to the Super Bowl, it wasn’t from a lack of success offensively. They managed to score 31 points against a stout 49ers defense as Johnson put together a strong game plan.
More of those strong game plans will be coming in 2024, as Johnson isn’t going anywhere. Despite being seen as the favorite to land the head coaching job with the Washington Commanders, and being in the running for the Seattle Seahawks’ job, he will remain in Detroit as offensive coordinator.
NFL News & Rumors: Ben Johnson, Seattle Seahawks, Washington Commanders, Detroit Lions Updates
Johnson told Washington and Seattle that he is no longer available for their job openings on Tuesday afternoon. He had met with the Seahawks in person on Monday but has opted to not take a head coaching job this cycle.
This is certainly a surprising bit of news, but news that excites the Lions and their fan base. Having Johnson call the plays for a third season gives them an edge over so many rivals in the NFL as they have continuity and chemistry built on their coaching staff that very few teams can contend with.
In 2023, the Lions ranked fifth in the NFL with 27.1 points per game and third in yards with 394.8. They were an explosive group, ranking second behind only the 49ers with 85 20+ yard plays during the season.
