Los Angeles Chargers: 5 Bold Predictions for the 2018 NFL Season

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Lead the League in Sacks

This prediction, out of the five that I will make, is the one that is the easiest to come true. Since the Chargers drafted Joey Bosa in 2016, Los Angeles has had the potential to have the best edge rush tandem in the league. Bosa on one side and Melvin Ingram on the other is a scary sight for quarterbacks.

Last year, the two of them together produced 23combined sacks. Twenty-three sacks were more than half of the team’s sack total. Each year, Ingram and Bosa have increased their sack totals together. Ingram and Bosa are still in the prime of their respective careers, so seeing an increase in sacks from both players should be expected.

Add three to four more sacks to both Bosa and Ingram’s sack totals, the tandem will finish with 30 or more combined sacks. Defensive coordinator Gus Bradley is one of the league’s best and can generate schemes to get sacks from other positions.

Also, expect some coverage sacks to occur when teams play the Chargers. Even without Verrett, this Chargers secondary is capable of shutting down some teams. Los Angeles still has Casey Hayward, who considers himself the best cornerback in league. Derwin James and Trevor Williams are both secondary players with star potential.

Los Angeles was already top five in sacks last season, so a leap to number one is very attainable. But the league leader in sacks, Pittsburgh, had 56 total sacks last year, while Los Angeles only had 43. Nonetheless, if Bosa and Ingram increase their production, and the other positions take advantage of Bradley’s play calling, Los Angeles can eclipse that 56 sack mark.
