Los Angeles Chargers: 5 Bold Predictions for the 2018 NFL Season

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

A Sweep of the AFC West

The Chargers have not won the AFC West since LaDainian Tomlinson was their starting running back. That will all change this upcoming season. Not only will Los Angeles win the AFC West but they will sweep all three of their divisional opponents in the process.

Los Angeles has the least amount of question marks at important positions on the field. Let’s start with the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs roster is filled with talent. But if Patrick Mahomes doesn’t prove to be a good quarterback, then the Chiefs are no longer contenders. In addition, the defense will take a step back without a ballhawk in the back-end like Marcus Peters. Kansas City doesn’t seem prepared for a potential shootout the Chargers can easily start.

Meanwhile, the Denver Broncos head coach is on the hot seat. One more down season in Denver and Vance Joseph may be fired after just two seasons. Denver’s quarterback Case Keenum just had his first good season as a pro and must validate that again this season. The defense should still be steady as usual, but Aqib Talib leaving will hurt more than it will help Denver. Los Angeles will win both games versus Denver mostly because of their more steady head coach and quarterback.

Oakland has the most flaws among AFC West teams. They just brought in a new head coach in Jon Gruden, which means a new system for Derek Carr. Gruden is seemingly already having problems in the locker room, being unable to get in contact with star Khalil Mack. On top of that, Oakland still has most of the same personnel on a defense that ranked 23rdin the league. Los Angeles won both games last year by an average of 10 points, so don’t expect much to change this season.

Going 6-0 within the AFC West will not be easily, especially with road games in Kansas City and Denver. But the Chargers have the talent and coaching to pull through in tough divisional games next season.
