The Offensive Line Has Struggled in Recent Weeks
All of the Rams fans have seemingly placed all of the blame on Goff and McVay for their struggles. That is somewhat true, but their offensive line has also been an issue in recent weeks.
The Rams offensive line started off on the right foot, dominating every game. According to Zoltán Buday from Pro Football Focus, the offensive line allowed 78 pressures and had a pass-blocking efficiency of 83.7. Both of those stats were top six in the NFL.
The Rams offensive line has played a big part in the offense's recent struggles:
First 10 weeks:
78 pressures allowed (6th fewest)
Pass blocking efficiency: 83.7 (t-4th best)Last 4 weeks (just 3 games):
51 pressures allowed (4th most)
Pass blocking efficiency: 71.4 (3rd worst)— Zoltán Buday (@PFF_Zoltan) December 10, 2018
As you can also see, in their last three games alone, they’ve allowed 51 pressure and a pass-blocking efficiency of a 71.4. Both of those were near the bottom of the league.
In 14 weeks, Los Angeles has allowed 29 sacks—tied for 21st in the NFL. Through their first 10 games, they allowed 19 sacks. In their last three games, they’ve allowed 10 sacks alone.
In Week 14, Goff was under duress all game. He was sacked three times and had his offensive line pushed in his face throughout. The play of the offensive line has to improve heading into the playoffs.
There’s no doubt in my mind that this offensive line with Andrew Whitworth, Rodger Saffold, John Sullivan, Austin Blythe, and Rob Havenstein can get back on track. There’s too much talent and experience for them not to. The Rams can do just that in Week 15 against the Eagles.
