Miami Dolphins: 3 Best Performances in Week 3 vs Raiders

Albert Wilson

It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to say this, but this year’s Miami Dolphins offense is truly fun to watch. They have thrown so many different wrinkles into the offense that you never know what’s coming next. It reminds me a bit of watching the 2008 team bring out the Wildcat offense. That offense was a gimmick that would ultimately die out, but that’s not what this year’s team is. They’re a fun, diverse, fast offense. An offense that’s predicated on spreading out the defense and beating you with speed.

Much of the credit for that shift in offensive philosophy — as far as personnel is concerned — has to go to the addition of former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Albert Wilson. Wilson is a burner who has allowed the Dolphins to play a much more wide-open, up-tempo, and creative offense. They’re still employing a lot of the bubble screens and quick-hitting passes that they had with former receiver Jarvis Landry, but it’s much more diverse. Landry was a handcuff, Wilson is bringing match-up nightmares.

Today that versatility and fun was on full display. The fun for Wilson truly started in the fourth quarter. Perhaps the biggest fourth quarter performance of Wilson’s life. First, his number was called on a simple shovel pass from Ryan Tannehill. A simple play which he busted for a big gain, to the tune of 74 yards and a touchdown. Fun. Even more fun, watching teammate Jakeem Grant speed down the sideline with Wilson and high-five him on his way to the end zone.

Just a few minutes later, Wilson would return the favor to Grant. In what can only be described as Miami’s version of the “Philly Special”, Tannehill faked a quick pass to Grant before handing the ball off to running back Frank Gore. Gore then pitched the ball to Wilson on an end-around. Then Wilson caps it off with a beautiful throw — he was a college quarterback, after all — to Jakeem Grant who broke it for a touchdown of his own.

It was a thing of beauty. And not something the team could have called last season.
