Miami Dolphins: 3 Takeaways From Week 3 Win vs Oakland Raiders

Albert Wilson Addition is Huge

When Miami Dolphins leading receiver Jarvis Landry was sent to Cleveland in the off-season, a large portion of the fan base lost their collective minds. And it wasn’t completely unwarranted. Landry was arguably one of the most solid options in the NFL. He caught everything you tossed his was and was almost guaranteed to give you over 100 catches in a season. He was also one of the more fiery personalities on the team. When the team was down, you could count on Landry bringing a certain amount of energy to the team. His valiant efforts to propel his team to victory were appreciated. And they are missed, to a point.

However, when the team signed former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Albert Wilson and former New England Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola, I was adamant that the team had gotten better. I would tell anyone who would listen that the combination of those two was an improvement over Landry. I was called crazy. Was called “a hater”. But after three weeks, I’m chalking this one up as a win.

The truth is, for all the good that Landry brought, there was just as much bad. He was a handcuff for the team’s offense, to their detriment. They had to feed him the ball on short-yardage plays, and hope he made something out of nothing. His fire, while providing a spark at times, also led to some drive-killing personal foul penalties and became somewhat of a sideshow toward the end of his tenure. Bringing in Albert Wilson in particular, on the other hand, has been a whole lot of positive with virtually no negative.

Wilson brings a versatility to this offense fans haven’t seen in years, if ever. Wilson is a guy you can line up in the slot. He can line up outside. You can put him in the backfield and hand the ball off. And, as we saw today, you can run trick plays that wind up with Wilson throwing a touchdown. He brings an entire aspect to the offense that Landry just didn’t. Miami clearly has a plan for Wilson and understands the kind of play-maker they have with him. I’m excited to see what new wrinkles we see in the coming weeks.
