Miami Dolphins: 3 Positions to Target in the NFL Draft

EDGE Rusher

I’m probably going to catch a lot of heat from Dolphins fans for not throwing quarterback into this one. I get it. A lot of fans — myself included — are frustrated with the direction this team is going. The offense can’t get on track, and a lot of that responsibility falls squarely on the shoulders of head coach Adam Gase and quarterback Ryan Tannehill. But like it or not, Tannehill is going to be the Miami Dolphins starting quarterback in 2019. Provided he’s healthy.

That has been the big caveat recently with Tannehill. Gase and his quarterback have a great record together, the problem has been getting Tannehill on the field. After missing a season with a significant knee injury, now Tannehill is sidelined with a shoulder injury that has fans like me worried about an Andrew Luck-type scenario. It would make sense to draft a QB, then, right?

Not so fast. If fans are looking for a guy to replace Ryan Tannehill, it means spending an early pick on a guy who can be the proverbial “franchise QB.” That guy doesn’t exist in this coming draft — particularly if Oregon QB Justin Herbert decides to stay one more year and play with his brother. Daniel Jones, Tyree Jackson, Ryan Finley, and a handful of other names are guys I like as developmental QBs, but I don’t believe they’re guys who are going to turn a franchise around.

If the Dolphins aren’t going to look towards the QB position, where should they look? EDGE. The 2019 NFL Draft is loaded with talent along the defensive front, and EDGE is no exception. With future Miami Dolphins Hall of Fame DE Cam Wake finally starting to show his age and the rest of the position disappointing, this could be the year the Dolphins finally find the EDGE of the future.

Who should the Miami Dolphins target at these three positions? Stay tuned in the coming weeks, as I’ll be giving you my top 3 targets at each position, along with some detailed analysis on each guy. And maybe a name or two to watch at each position as a “sleeper” candidate. Until then, Fins Up!
