Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp had one of the best seasons for a player at his position in NFL history. With Matthew Stafford as his quarterback, Kupp took his game to another level in 2021. Plenty around the NFL took notice, including Dallas Cowboys rising star Micah Parsons.
He completed the wide receiver triple crown, as he led the league in receptions, yardage and touchdowns. He is only the fourth player in the Super Bowl era to accomplish that feat, joining Jerry Rice from 1990, Sterling Sharpe in 1992 and Steve Smith in 2005.
The Eastern Washington product caught 145 passes for 1,947 yards and 16 touchdowns. He was close to taking down some records as well.
Kupp fell four receptions short of Michael Thomasâ record for catches in a season, which was set in 2019. He was 17 yards short of Calvin Johnsonâs single-season record of 1,964 for yardage, which he set in 2012, also with Stafford as his quarterback.
While he received a ton of praise for the season he had and would have gotten even more had he broken some records, Kupp was humble when approaching the numbers. He acknowledged that those records were broken in 16-game regular seasons and the NFL introduced a 17-game regular season this year.
Kupp has a ton of respect for those records and believes they hold different weights. Separating the records by eras is something he believes should happen, as he said it wouldnât feel right breaking them with an extra game.
There will assuredly be records broken in the coming years as players will benefit from the extra game, but that doesnât take away anything from their performance. Kupp was outstanding all season and garnered attention from some peers around the league.
One person whose eye he caught was Micah Parsons of the Dallas Cowboys. Parsons was very complimentary of the Rams wide receiver, heaping praise on him, as he believes Kupp is the best player in the NFL bar none.
Cooper Kuppâs performance this season is a big reason that the Rams are heading to the Super Bowl to face off with the Cincinnati Bengals. Still not acknowledged by some people as an elite wide receiver, Kupp will have a chance to showcase his talent on the biggest stage in football at Super Bowl 56.
