Minnesota Vikings Planning Pursuit Of Rival Packers’ Star

Could the Minnesota Vikings poach one of the Green Bay Packers’ best defensive players in free agency this coming offseason?

Earlier this week, Bleacher Report suggested that the Vikings should take a run at Packers linebacker Rashan Gary come springtime.

B/R cites that Minnesota projects to have considerable cap space during the offseason, so it would definitely have enough money to strike a deal for Gary if it so desires.

Gary is currently in his fifth season with the Packers and has logged five tackles and 3.5 sacks through the first four games of the year.

The 25-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Michigan, was selected by Green Bay with the 12th overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft.

He made limited impact during his rookie campaign, finishing with 21 tackles and two sacks. Gary then showed significant progression during his sophomore season, totaling 35 tackles, five sacks and a fumble recovery. He proceeded to break out in 2021, racking up 47 stops, 9.5 sacks, a couple of forced fumbles and a fumble recovery in what remains his most productive campaign to date.

Last year, Gary was on track to have the best year of his career, but a torn ACL ended his season after just nine games. During that time, he registered 32 tackles, six sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

The Vikings may certainly need to add a pass rusher in free agency, as their own edge rusher, Danielle Hunter, is set to hit the open market, as well. With Gary being three years younger than Hunter and Minnesota potentially headed toward a rebuild, Gary would definitely make sense.

The Vikings finally picked up their first win of the season by beating the Carolina Panthers last weekend. They will host the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
