Things have not gone according to plan for Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals.
Following three impressive seasons to start off his NFL career, Murray inked a five-year, $230.5 million contract with the Cardinals ahead of the 2022 campaign.
Murray then proceeded to play in just 11 games last season before tearing his ACL. During his time on the field, he was rather uninspiring, throwing for 2,368 yards, 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions while posting a modest 87.2 passer rating, the lowest of his career. Additionally, Arizona went just 3-8 in his starts, a far cry from the 11-6 record the squad posted in 2021.
Now, Murray’s future in the desert appears to be in question. The 26-year-old has begun the 2023 season on the PUP list as he recovers from his knee injury, and some wonder if he has played his last game in a Cardinals uniform entirely.
The Cards are currently employing Joshua Dobbs under center, but it’s hard to imagine he figures into their long-term plans.
Regardless, the Cardinals would surely like to get out from under Murray’s contract. While finding a taker may be tough, the Minnesota Vikings could be one place to look.
After an 0-2 start, there has been speculation that the Vikings could end up moving Kirk Cousins, who has been the franchise’s signal-caller since 2018.
Christopher Kline of FanSided suggests that Arizona could trade Murray and a pair of 2024 draft picks—a fourth-rounder plus a fifth—to Minnesota for Cousins and a sixth-rounder.
Cousins’ contract expires at the end of this season, so he could just represent a temporary placeholder for the Cardinals while they achieve their primary goal of shedding Murray’s salary. This would also allow Arizona to fully begin the rebuilding process.
Meanwhile, the Vikings would get the chance to pair Kyler Murray with star wide receiver Justin Jefferson.
