If the Pittsburgh Steelers want to find the amount of success they feel they are capable of having, they need to figure things out offensively. They are 2-1 currently in large part because of the performance of their defense, which remains one of the most vaunted pass-rushing units in the NFL despite Cam Heyward being sidelined with an injury.
For Pittsburgh to find sustained success offensively, as they had in the second half against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 3, their offensive line needs to pick it up. The Steelers currently rank last in pass blocking and 29th in run blocking based on PFF grades.
A lot of blame has been placed on offensive coordinator Matt Canada and rightfully so as his game plans and play calling have been questionable at times. But, if the players are executing as little as the Steelers’ offensive line currently is, it is going to be difficult to find success.
One of the players who have struggled as a result of the offensive line is running back Najee Harris. Running lanes have been impossible to come by, which has led to underwhelming production, gaining 139 yards on 35 carries without a score.
When watching videos of the Steelers’ offense, Harris is being hit sometimes as the ball is being handed to him, which makes for tough sledding. But, for whatever reason, whenever Jaylen Warren steps on the field, the offense seems to hit another gear as he provides more explosiveness.
That, along with some comments made by Harris following the team’s victory over the Raiders, could lead to his days as the Steelers’ lead back being numbered. Harris responded to comments made by head coach Mike Tomlin that can be taken as a joke, but will certainly raise some eyebrows.
“Mike T just be talkin’ s***,” Harris told reporters after Pittsburgh’s Week 3 win. “You’re gonna have some games where stuff doesn’t go your way. All that matters is what you do the next play, the next game. I think that’s more of a challenge he gave us.”
This isn’t the first time that comments Harris has made have garnered some headlines. The plummeting running back market is something he and the Steelers are going to have to navigate in the near future as a decision will have to be made next offseason about the fifth-year option on his rookie contract.
If he doesn’t start performing at a higher level, the decision will be an easy one for the Steelers to make.
