7. Jamie Newman, Georgia
The Bulldogs said goodbye to the fourth all-time leading passer in school history this summer as Jake Fromm entered the NFL draft. Fromm excited Georgia fans and NFL scouts during his rookie season, but the young quarterback never fully lived up to his hype and never won a National Championship.
With Fromm’s departure comes the promise of a new future in Georgia. Two days after Fromm declared for the draft, Newman announced his intention to transfer to Georgia from Wake Forest.
In a statement on Twitter, Newman wrote,
I am excited about joining such a great football program under the leadership of Coach Smart and offensive coordinator Coach Coley. I believe in UGA’s amazing staff, great football program, and the passionate fans supporting this team.
At Wake Forest, the 6-4 quarterback played well, but he wasn’t Heisman material. Last season, Newman completed 60.9% of his pass attempts for 2,868 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He also ran for 574 yards and six touchdowns.
While Newman should start for the Bulldogs this coming season, there’s no guarantee he approaches Heisman levels. Admittedly, this selection is projecting Newman’s significant growth in Georgia’s offense.
However, the Bulldogs are one of the few powerhouse schools in college football right now. For the past three years, Kirby Smart’s program has been right in the thick of it. If Newman puts Georgia over the top, and that’s a big if, he should receive some votes.
