6. Sam Ehlinger, Texas
If you mashed Ehlinger’s sophomore and junior seasons together, he’d probably take home some Heisman votes. To date, the Longhorn hasn’t seen his name appear in the voting, but that could all change in 2020.
In 2018, Ehlinger threw for 3,292 yards, 25 touchdowns, and five interceptions. He led Texas to a 10-4 record, but the young quarterback set himself apart from others on the ground. He ran for 482 yards and scored 16 touchdowns, following the path of players like Dak Prescott and Tim Tebow.
Ehlinger’s passing numbers improved this past season. He threw for 3,663 yards, 32 touchdowns, and ten interceptions, but the Longhorns only won eight games. Ehlinger’s scoring numbers also dove as he reached the end zone nine fewer times on the ground despite churning out 663 rushing yards.
While he remains an underdog candidate to win the Heisman, a successful year from Texas could put Ehlinger right in the middle of the action.
Ehlinger is already second in school history in passing yards (8,870) and passing touchdowns (68), but he trails Colt McCoy by an insurmountable gap. Interestingly, Ehlinger is also already tenth in Longhorn history in rushing yards and fifth in rushing touchdowns.
