9. Ian Book, Notre Dame
Book went from being a pretender to the real deal at Notre Dame over the course of a few seasons. He’s still not a truly elite quarterback, but he does crack the top ten for now. If this were a list of future NFL prospects, Book wouldn’t come close to the top, but he’s a quality college football quarterback.
Last season, Book only completed 60.2% of his pass attempts, but he threw for 3,034 yards, 34 touchdowns, and six interceptions. He also ran for 546 yards and four touchdowns. Notre Dame went 11-2, finishing with at least ten wins for the third year in a row.
While Notre Dame ranked in the top ten of the AP Poll for the team’s first seven games, a loss to No. 19 Michigan dropped the Fighting Irish out of the top ten, where Book’s team remained for the final six games.
Notre Dame went 2-2 against ranked opponents in 2019 and closed out the season with a resounding 33-9 victory over the unranked Iowa State Cyclones in the Camping World Bowl.
Book is by no means a bad quarterback, but he isn’t particularly great either. He’s one of the most polarizing quarterbacks in college football. For instance, while he threw five touchdowns against Bowling Green, Navy, and New Mexico, Book also crumbled against high ranking defenses last year.
In Notre Dame’s 17-23 loss to the Georgia Bulldogs, Book threw two interceptions. In an embarrassing 45-14 loss to the Michigan Wolverines, Book only completed 32.0% of his pass attempts for 73 yards.
Book remains a quality college quarterback, but he’s not an elite football player.
