7. Jamie Newman, Georgia
The raw numbers might not amount to much, but Pro Football Focus (PFF) applauded Newman in an article written in January. PFF’s analytics picked up on some trends raw statistics didn’t. For instance, the website claims Newman is one of the best tight-window passers in college football.
PFF also acknowledged Newman as one of the three highest-graded quarterbacks through Week 11 of the 2019 college season. As he prepares to take over for Jake Fromm at one of the country’s premier programs, analysts wonder if Newman can get Georgia back to the College Football Playoffs.
Newman played the first three seasons of his college career at Wake Forest but announced his intention to transfer to Georgia in January. In a prepared statement on Twitter, Newman wrote,
I am excited about joining such a great football program under the leadership of Coach Smart and offensive coordinator Coach Coley. I believe in UGA’s amazing staff, great football program, and the passionate fans supporting this team.
In 2019, Newman served as Wake Forest’s full-time starter for the first time. He completed 60.9% of his pass attempts for 2,868 yards and 26 touchdowns. He also ran for 574 yards and six touchdowns.
Depending on how he adapts to Georgia’s offense, Newman could become a Heisman Trophy candidate in 2020.
