5. Kedon Slovis, USC
In 2018, JT Daniels became the second true freshman to start the season opener at USC. He appeared in 11 games for the Trojans, and USC believed he was Sam Darnold’s heir. However, Daniels suffered a season-ending injury in USC’s season opener this past season.
That’s when Slovis entered the picture. The true freshman took over for Daniels and completely replaced the former starter. Slovis played so well that Daniels is transferring to Georgia, where he wants to replace Jake Fromm. I don’t think he’ll take the job from fellow transfer Jamie Newman though.
Slovis is part of the next wave of great college quarterbacks. In 2019, he completed 71.9% of his pass attempts for 3,502 yards, 30 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. While Slovis possesses little to no mobility outside of the pocket, his accuracy is eye-catching.
Slovis finished second in the Pac-12 in passing yards last season, out-throwing NFL draft picks Jacob Eason and Justin Herbert. The 19-year-old also finished third in the entire FBS among qualified quarterbacks in completion percentage.
USC finished the 2019 season with an 8-5 record, improving from 5-7 in the previous year. Assuming Slovis continues trending upward, he could restore the program to relevance.
