The Atlanta Falcons don’t exactly have an enviable situation at quarterback.
They tried both Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke under center this past season, but neither player inspired much confidence.
The Falcons are in a bit of a pickle when it comes to their circumstances at signal-caller heading into 2024, but new head coach Raheem Morris seems ready to tackle it.
“Sometimes you have to look at the college tape, you can see it a little bit in free agency, you can visualize how you can trade,” Morris said, via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. “You have all those windows out there. You have all those avenues, but I have a lot of confidence in the people who are going to be able to help me be a part of finding our next quarterback to move forward.”
Morris added that he is “used to a very high level” when it comes to quarterbacks, as he was with Atlanta when Matt Ryan was taking snaps and spent time with Matthew Stafford during his stint as defensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Rams.
The problem is, the Falcons don’t have any easy routes to take this offseason.
Atlanta doesn’t have one of the top picks of the NFL Draft, so it can’t take USC’s Caleb Williams or North Carolina’s Drake Maye. LSU’s Jayden Daniels could be available when the Falcons pick at No. 8, but even that might not be an option for them.
As for free agency, Russell Wilson will likely be on the market, but whether or not he would actually link up with Atlanta is anyone’s guess (he probably wouldn’t). The Falcons can explore a trade for someone like Justin Fields, but Fields has been remarkably inconsistent with the Chicago Bears.
There really is no simple avenue for Atlanta to take in the coming months. Morris and Co. may have to get creative, but that comes with the territory.
The Falcons went 7-10 this year and have not posted a winning season since the 2017-18 campaign.
