Extra Time for Patriots Is a Dangerous Thing

Since Bill Belichick became the team’s head coach in 2000, the Patriots are 13-5 following a regular-season bye week. Granted, Sunday night’s game didn’t come after a bye week, but New England did have an extra three days to prepare after playing in the Thursday night game in Week 5.

The point I’m trying to make is that when you’re facing a Belichick-coached team, extra preparation time can be a dangerous thing for opposing squads. The veteran coach generally has his team well prepared, and a few extra days is like an eternity for such a skilled play-caller.

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ offense has been on fire, and they eventually found their way on that side of the ball again on Sunday night. But the Patriots had a great game plan that ended up allowing them to earn a huge win in prime-time.

It still wasn’t easy because Kansas City looks to be for real, but New England had just enough to hand the Chiefs their first loss of the season.
