It has not been a fun year for New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones, who is in the middle of a nightmarish season and may not be the Patriots’ signal-caller for much longer.
Jones has struggled mightily in his third NFL campaign. Not only has he not gotten better, but he has actually regressed since his rookie year, throwing for 1,861 yards and 10 touchdowns while being tied for the league lead with nine interceptions. He has completed 64.8 percent of his passes and is posting a passer rating of just 80.2, the worst mark of his career.
But what is really infuriating New England the most about Jones’ 2023 season has been his decision-making, according to Zack Cox of NESN.
Cox notes that the Pats thought they would be getting a smart, efficient, game-managing quarterback when they took Jones with the 15th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, but instead, they are seeing a signal-caller who is passing up open receivers and doing things that a quarterback with good decision-making qualities would not do.
He adds that the Patriots’ issues with Cox go beyond his physical limitations. The main problem is that he doesn’t seem to be taking the coaching very well.
That probably started when Jones went outside the organization for coaching last season, which angered head coach Bill Belichick. New England actually shopped Jones last offseason, but it was not able to find any offers it liked for the 25-year-old.
The worst part about all of this is that the Pats are just 2-7 this season, representing their worst start since 2000, which was Belichick’s first year at the helm.
Now, Belichick may very well be coaching for his job as the Patriots head to Germany to battle the Indianapolis Colts this Sunday.
You certainly can’t pin all of the blame on Mac Jones, but he has definitely been an issue in 2023.
